ODDS AND ENDS, JOURNAL FUN

There is a Jewish tradition to leave stones at grave sites. Just a pile of stones.

Witches bury stones and crystals as gifts for the fairy earth people.

In “Burning Man” by Alan Russell, the main character Michael Gideon interviews Dinah, a high school girl who has been bullied. He says to her,”You seem like a smart girl. Why did you let yourself be a victim?” Becoming a victim has nothing to do with being smart or dumb. It isn’t even about weakness, except for the bully’s weakness. I have been told that the German word for bully, translates to “half person.” Bullies are immature, and are usually themselves cowards. What could the girl in this book have done to make fellow students stop bullying her?

Social media sites that focus on books and authors: Goodreads, Shelfari and LibraryThing. There is also Writer’s cafe.

What was Perry Mason like as a student? Dr. Kildare? Think about a person whose smarts you admire. What was that person like as a student?

Arms up or out for a better attitude and mood. Here is a tip from my winter sojourn instructor. Feeling resistance? Spread your arms out. Let your body form a capital “T”.

Abe Lincoln was an unschooler. Where Lincoln did his best was in reading books. They were his teachers. I live in a wildlife refuge. There’s a frog in my throat; dust bunnies under my desk; a FOX on television; dear in my letters.

Bullycide: a term for bullying that is so bad it leads to suicide or a suicide attempt.

It is a kid thing to do. Bullies are immature. Adults try to bully each other too. Bosses try to bully; police and teachers. They try to say it is for their victim’s good.

Dog breeds: Toto in “Wizard of Oz was a cairn terrier.

Chauffeur: The word is French for stoker. Early cars ran on steam or battery power.

All Lives Matter, The Legacy of Sandra Bland

Sandra Bland was an eloquent spokesperson for Black Lives Matter. She knew that all lives matter. Her tragic death reminded us of that. Her arrest video was painful to watch because it was a classic example of bullying. I have known too many bullies in my life.

Everyone dislikes bullies, but we all bully sometimes. Some people are easy victims. We can yell at the store clerk for mixing up our order; we can yell at the waitress when the kitchen burned our steak. We justify our bullying. He did something stupid. She should have known better. Bullying is often misdirected anger.

We are frustrated when things go wrong. We need to take it out on somebody. Kick the dog; scream at the kids; pull a trembling woman from her automobile and label it resisting arrest.

We all have power over someone, and when we misuse that power, the technical term is bullying.

Let’s find find other ways to deal with our frustrations.

Otherwise we might end up on candid camera like that policeman and the beautiful and eloquent Sandra Bland.

Sandy, we need you back to stand up for what is right. We need you to be our spokesperson again. You stood up for what was wrong. You died showing us what was wrong.

LEARNING HACK: TAKE THE SMART BUS

In the the Southeastern Michigan area where I live, we have Smart buses and School buses. The Smart busses are public transformation. School busses, of course, transport students to and from the daily prison we call school.

These busses seem a great analogy for two types of education. There is the school system that has existed in American since Horace Mann advocated disciplinary action and Prussian military school methods in the early 19th century. We have not much changed our model of schooling since then.

Outside of the school system, there are a million ways to learn. I have detailed a few of them here in my blog. There is a growing movement in this country called “unschooling.” It means getting an education away from the proms, sports, fashion shows and other distractions present in many school systems.

Let’s look at the analogy of busses.

School busses go the school. (Duh!)

Smart busses go to malls, museums, libraries and courthouses.

School busses carry bullies and other immature beings like class clowns.

Smart busses carry committed adults.

School busses go a place where learning is difficult.

Smart busses go to places where learning is fun and natural.

School busses have flying gum wrappers, globs of chewed gum, spitting and even kicking.

Smart busses have people reading or speaking to each other in respectful tones.

School busses cost tax payers millions of dollars every year.

Smart busses are an intelligent alternative to gas guzzling commutes.

I am not saying we should place our children on public transportation and let them spend the day doing whatever they want. Un-schooling is not completely unstructured. But it is an alternative to the failed school systems in America.

In the next several weeks I will talk more about home schooling, the granny cloud, and other nontraditional systems of education.

It is time to decide if we will continue to ride the school bus or get on the smart bus.
